The official collaboration was based on the research cooperation between Prof. Wang Zhi, Chair of Physics, BJTU and Prof. Peter Bienstman, Department of Information Technology, UG. In the April of 2019, Prof. Peter Bienstman visited BJTU for the first time and introduced the European Master of Science in Photonics to BJTU profs and students. After the visit, the two sides initiated the process of course mapping, agreement drafting, reviewing and signing. After hard work of almost one year, the agreement was finally reached by both Universities.

The agreement is of 3+2 framework and allows students of BJTU in Physics, Applied Physics, Optoelectronic Information Science and Engineering to enroll in UG in the program of European Master of Science in Photonics. The participants should complete three academic years of study toward their degree requirements for a Bachelor of Science from BJTU and meet the standard UGent admission requirements for acceptance onto the Master of Science degrees. After the completion of three years of study in BJTU and two years of study in UGent, students will obtain a Bachelor of Science degree at BJTU and the Master of Science degree European Master of Science in Photonics jointly awarded by UGent.
