SCHOOL OF SCIENCE
Founded in 1998, the School of Science consists of 5 departments and institutes, including Department of Mathematics, Department of Physics, Department of Chemistry, Institute of Optoelectronic Technology, College of Life Sciences and Bio-engineering.
For undergraduate education, the programs include Information and Computational Sciences, Statistics, Optical Information Science and Technology, Material Chemistry, Engineering Mechanics, Applied Physics, Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Information and Computational Sciences(Bioinformatics), Mathematics and Applied Mathematics (Traffic System Science) and Nanomaterials and Technology. Nowadays, there are more than 1,300 undergraduate students studying in the School. In 2021，75.68% undergraduate students were admitted to graduate study.
For graduate education, School of Science currently has 6 doctoral programs in the level of the first discipline: Mathematics, Statistics, Systems Science(jointly run with School of Traffic and Transportation)，Physics, Optical Engineering, and Electronic Information(Eng.D). Plus, there are 8 masters’ degree programs in the first level discipline: Mathematics, Statistics, Systems Science(jointly run with School of Traffic and Transportation)，Physics, Optical Engineering, Biology, Electronic Information, and Materials and Chemistry Engineering. Currently, 453 master students and 241 Ph.D. students now are studying in School of Science, BJTU.
In terms of our staff, there are 261 in total. 205 of them are faculty members; among them, 4 are academicians of China Academy of Science and China Academy of Engineer, 74 professors, and 90 associate professors and senior engineers. Many of them are PIs of various national scientific and research programs, which are financially supported by Central Government.
Additionally, School of Science keeps the top record of the published SCI papers in Beijing Jiaotong University.
School of Science has always put great value on international exchange and cooperation. 40% of science faculty members have oversea experience longer than half a year. Our collaborative education partners are from around the world, such as University of Birmingham, University of Waterloo, Ghent University and Loughborough University, and so on. Notably, the joint education program in Nanomaterials and Technology by BJTU and University of Waterloo (UW) was approved to admit 60 students through Gaokao every year since 2013, which was a milestone for education internationalization of both BJTU and UW.
